Patriotic Postcards

Often including heraldic symbols, Canada and US in particular produced many patriotic postcards. These were often associated with national holidays and were particularly popular during the First World War and prior to it. I only have a few, below.

Republic of Madawaska, was an unrecognized state from 1827–1842. It lay partly in Maine and partly in northwestern NB. Now ceremonially acknowledged in Edmunston, where the mayor there serves as its leader. Card dates from about 1938. Publ. by PE Co., Ottawa. Never used.

The defenders of civilisation here, were once called the Triple Entente. Prior to 1915 they were France, Great Britain and the Russian Empire. This card is post 1915, when Italy joined the original three. Postcard is a colourised Real Photo card publ. with a divided back in France. Never used.

 Sitting Bull's War Bonnet, on exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. This Museum card dates ca1950. Divided back. Never used.
